How the Food Network Uses Infographics to Keep Their Audience Engaged Beyond the Television Screen

Any self-appointed foodie knows the Food Network for their energetic and competitive television shows, but they may not be aware that the infamous broadcast company also maintains a digital presence. From streaming video to archived recipes and drool-worthy food photography, Food Network’s website is an interactive extension of their television content.

Their inclination for visual content extends into their digital content as well.  For more than 10 years, the food network has been producing and publishing infographics on their corporate blog FN Dish. The graphics serve many purposes for the network and their audience, connecting their online content with their television media.

Catering to Their Audience

As a whole, the Food Network understands who their audience is and caters their content to them. They realize that their audience is interested in food-related entertainment and stick to this area of expertise. This connection influences the majority of their content and their infographics are no different. All are related to cooking, food preparation, and their shows and focus heavily on graphics to communicate information instead of writing.

Keeping it Visual

As a broadcast network whose primary content is visual, infographics allow Food Network to expand their platforms while maintaining their graphic appeal. Instead of simply reviewing or summarizing their shows in writing, the pictorial and creative aspects of infographics create a sense of continuity between their broadcast content and their online platform. They recognize that looking at a photograph of a juicy red strawberry will be much more enticing than just writing about the berry. This strengthens the Food Network brand image and caters to their visually-inclined audience.

Many serve as resources for cooking skills, such as chopping, crafting smoothies, and packing picnics. They can be viewed on the internet or even printed and displayed in a viewer’s kitchen to help their cooking process.

Other infographics are helpful in relation to Food Network content. They help viewers generate schedules that revolve around their broadcasts or even teach them skills to compete on their shows. Generally, the food network infographics take their audience one step beyond simply absorbing information and allow them to intellectually or physically interact with their content.

Promoting Their Content

Although their content is useful for their audience, the infographics also serve another role for the Food Network. Each of the infographics is directly connected to a program on their channel. They catch viewer interest with charts, statistics, and colorful visuals and then attach information about upcoming show releases or network events. Although Food Network’s infographics are informative and interactive, they ultimately provide a promotional service. They are advertisements disguised behind helpful statistics and tips.
